ECI to Announce Maha, Jh’khand, K’taka Bypoll Dates Today
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand later today. A press conference has been scheduled for 3:30 PM at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, according to an official statement from the ECI.
The statement read, “The Election Commission of India will unveil the schedule for the general election to the legislative assemblies of Maharashtra and Jharkhand 2024.”
Maharashtra’s legislative assembly term is set to conclude on November 26, while Jharkhand’s assembly will complete its tenure on January 5, 2025.
In the previous elections, held in 2019, Maharashtra conducted its polling in a single phase, while Jharkhand’s election was spread over five phases.
In the meantime, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has commenced discussions on seat-sharing with key allies, including Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) and the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) Party. Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP’s in-charge for Jharkhand elections, mentioned that the seat-sharing deal within the NDA is nearly finalized, and the party plans to release its first list of candidates within 48 hours after the poll schedule is announced.
Karnataka Bypolls Dates Likely to be Revealed
The ECI likely to announce for bypolls for Sandur, Shiggaon-Savanur and Channapatna Assembly segments. The bypolls necessiated following the MLAs of these constituencies elected as MPs during general election.
